The Project:
For more than a century, a special historic home in Texas has witnessed plenty of changes and weathered its fair share of challenges. But perhaps none quite as dramatic as being uprooted from its original location and moved to its new owner’s 50-acre ranch, where once settled, the beautiful 113 year-old home underwent a massive renovation.
That included installing a new roof. The home originally had a cedar shake roof which complemented its Victorian architectural style. With the goal to try and achieve a similar look, the owner also wanted to ensure the home was protected against severe Texas weather including hail, wind, thunderstorms, extreme heat and wildfires. He also needed to find a roof light enough to maintain the structural integrity of the old home.
The Challenge:
Finding a roofing option that met every one of the homeowner’s goals proved to be one of the least challenging aspects of this project. With a significantly longer lifespan than asphalt, lower weight than tile or slate, and the ability to match any roof style including shake, metal was the obvious choice. The metal shingles the homeowner chose also fit with the home’s original style and feature an interlocking design that mimics traditional shake while also maximizing strength and reliability even in extreme conditions.
Spotlight on MRA member Kassel & Irons and installer Green Knight:
The homeowner chose KasselShake in Shake Gray from Kassel & Irons, an Isaiah Industries’ manufacturing and distribution company. This shingle material closely matches shake roofing while providing all the many benefits of metal roofing. Installer Green Knight Metal Roofing out of Austin installed the new roof in just 10 days, paying close attention to every intricate detail. The result? A one-of-a-kind roof that matches the unique house it now helps protect.
“This project is an excellent example of how a quality metal roof can provide the latest modern day benefits to help protect, make a home more efficient and reliable, yet also perfectly complement traditional architectural styles,” said Renee Ramey, MRA executive director.
