I have a 7/12 shingle roof that is close to the end of its life. I would like to re roof with metal sheeting. I have been told that I cannot apply directly over shingles because the grit combined with movement of metal will cause metal roofing to deteriorate and rust.
Would it be OK to install 4X8X.5 foam insulation to shingles and then cover with metal sheeting?

You MUST check with the manufacturer of the roofing. I cannot answer this question as it is based very much upon the particular product being installed and how it has been tested. Some products can be installed this way though.
I always suggest a layer of underlayment when metal is installed over old shingles, to prevent the rubbing friction you're concerned about. Good thinking!
