I am planning to strip my roof (6/12 pitch)down to the 1x4 lathing on 4" centers, add another 1x4 between all the existing ones, cover with a 50% lap of 30# felt and use galvalume ag panel. At present the home has no soffit or gable vents and no overhang. I will be extending my rafters 18 inches and adding soffit vents. Can the ridge be vented by nailing aluminum screen wire to keep out insects over the opening down the peak and no closures under the ridge cap rather than using one of the products such as Profile Vent? Also the metal mfg. turns up the flat edge of each panel at the top to keep water from blowing under.

Jim,
When we tear wood shingles or wood shakes off we install 1/2" OSB or plywood with radiant barrier over the lathe. Even if you don't use the material with a radiant barrier, you get a smoother deck with the OSB or plywood. On ag panels, we don't turn the ridge edge up, that is used on costlier panels, but that doesn't mean you can't. Also, the manufacturers make a fibered closure that is a ridge vent, you just use the regular metal ridge over it and you have a smooth profile. The closure is manufactured in several profiles, and it is completely breathable.

Thanks for the response. I have a follow-up question on the ventilation issue. I am only roofing a 26 foot section of the house at this time and using the formula on the Profile Vent website I arrived at 9 minimum feet of Profile Vent required (attic length 26 feet 8 inches, attic width 24 feet) which would be only 3 panels with the Provile Vent. Their website goes on to say to run the product the entire length of the ridge for appearance purposes. In one of the ventilation posts on this site I read that too much ridge ventilation is not good. What would be the correct procedure in this situation?
Thanks,
Jim

Ideally, the ridge vent will extend the entire ridge. The amount of air flow through the ridge should be equal to or exceed the total amount of soffit free air flow.
