What you have experienced is probably due to ventilation and insulation issues. This certainly is not the normal case and should not be something you experience in your home.

The business I have in South Carolina has a metal roof with insulation and during any of many strong late summer storms the noise if level is high. I am considering a metal roof for a new home I am building and was wondering if I will experience the same or is there a difference for residential metal roofs. Best Regards; Michael S Simmons

Noise levels in most residential application are no different that with a traditional asphalt roof.
When the roof is properly attached to a full plywood deck, there is almost no noise transmission at all.
