my roof with shingles is leaking my son who has done constuction for about 3 years is talking me into a metal roof my question is can metal roof be put right over my shingles with 2x4's to screw the metal roof down or do we need to take all the shingles off and start with barriers? and yes we will be doing this job just like all our jobs ourselves. After all the good things I have read I really want this roof job to be metal and not have to take all the old shingles off.

Thanks for your questions. There are many important variables here. If your home has a well vented attic then the new metal roof can probably by installed along with underlayment over the old shingles. A picture is worth a thousand words in these cases and there are myriad of installation options in this case.
First and foremost, you must identify what is permissible by the manufacturer that you ultimately select. Most have provisions for over shingles.
