Fred, you need to take into consideration the specific application and location of the project. The more complex the geometry of the roof the more I would lean to aluminum as it is easier to cut. In high humidity areas I would also recommend aluminum becuase of its resistance to corrosion. Aluminum will be more money, but that should offset by the ease of cutting. An embossed product will minimize any visual effect of hail storms. Thanks for your interest in metal roofing.

Doris, it all depends upon the product being installed and what you're trying to accomplish with the foam.

Fred, Thanks for the question. There are many areas that can be compared and contrasted when looking at aluminum and steel. For metal roofing, the big differences are that aluminum is more corrosion resistant and steel is stronger and less expensive. Also, aluminum has about 1/3 the density of steel - much lighter. Both are commonly recycled. Both are also highly effective roofing materials when properly designed. Regards, David Stermer

Would there be any benefit to adding foam insulation under the aluminum?

Solid answers right there. As a general rule, you will see aluminum specified by a default in coastal applications. What type of roof were you considering? Vertically raised standing seam will show hail damage dramatically as compared to some of the stamped panels like Dick mentioned.

Attic type and what your rationale on the foam is are pivotal to evaluating the decision.
