Generally speaking, what you were told is true unless you're using a very high end tile roof. The metal is lower weight though and may require less structural support. It also does not pose a major cave-in risk in the event of an interior fire. Metal does generally offer greater durability and better warranties.

Why is a metal roof with a tile look more expensive than a clay or cement tile roof? I am building a new home; was surprised when my builder told me a metal roof tile look would cost more than a conventional tile roof.

The metal is a more complex manufacturing and finish process. It would make sense that it is a bit more expensive.
