We wondered if they sprayed the metal roof to reduce condensation. It is our thought that even if we seal/close the sofets vents, one would still want to insulate above the sheet rock because you essentially are paying to heat and cool the attic area. Are we thinking this through correctly?? Thank you again for your help and insights.

I do not see any pitfalls with doing that; seems like an appropriate action. Good question though!

Yes, you might want to google "hot roof theory" or "conditioned attic space" but what you'd be creating is increasingly done. Professor William Rose from Illinois has been an advocate of it. Basically you're sealing the attic off from heat transfer and moisture both from the outside and the living quarters. Some folks will actually go ahead and provide a minimal amount of heat or a/c to the space as well. I see no issues with what you're doing though there MAY be some asphalt shingle manufacturers who do not approve the application of their products over insulation.

Our son purchased a home with a metal roof that has had foam sprayed on the back of the roof. The house has typical eve sofet venting. The attic currently has no insulation over the sheet rock. We are considering blowing in insulation to aid in energy efficiency. Do you agree with this approach or do you see any pitfalls to this approach? Thanks for your help.

No issues there. Can't hurt to be honest but it begs the question why they put SPF on the roof with a vented attic.

Teri,
That is fine if you insulated that surface, but if you seal the attic, it needs to be conditioned if only slightly. You have to move that air and remove the moisture.
