Were the new screws just longer or also a larger size (wider)?

Our house is 8 years old with a metal roof. Last summer we noticed many of the screws were backing out. We had someone come out and he advised us we needed longer screws so he replaced the screws. Now a year later the many of the screws are backing out again. We currently have one place that is leaking. The guy that repaired it last summer now tells us that the trouble is that we have oriented strand board (OSB), underneath and that will have to be replaced. What would you recommend?
