I would look for a local engineer or materials testing lab that can come and check the thickness. Then after you have a decimal thickness on the metal, you will want to take that to your metal roof supplier and see what that decimal thickness equates to in terms of their gauge. There is a lot of variation in gauge measurements so that might be where the confusion is coming from.

I'm the property manager for a 50 unit Townhouse Assn. We have a claim pending to replace all the r panel roofs on all our buildings. The underwriters inspector spent 4 days on our roof and declared all a total loss due to hail. He used a guage and found our panels to be 29 ga. The bidding companies and the original metal supplier insists they're 26 ga. What neutral expert can I get to settle this. We're stuck!!!

To determine the thickness of your metal, you should contact a local engineer or materials testing lab that can conduct measurements for you. Once you have the decimal thickness, consult your metal roof supplier to understand how that decimal thickness corresponds to their gauge system. It's essential to clarify any confusion regarding gauge measurements, as there can be variations in the way different suppliers interpret gauges.
