Sounds like it has had a very long life. Cleaning the rust and then repainting is likely an option but may not be worth the cost. Feel free to send photos of the roof to me for further input. todd@asktoddmiller.com
Hi, we are remodeling and took out our old fireplace and put in a new one. We have to patch up the place where our chimney was and around our new chimney. We think the roof is 40 years old or older. It's definitely metal. GC says his roofer can't find it anywhere and wants to use regular shingles on the patch area and try to reuse old metal shingles around the new chimney. They first said we need a new roof because you can't fix this style of roof due to the way it's put on. Not sure what changed. Does anyone know where to buy these shingles or if they even exist anymore? We are so worried our roof is going to leak because they're going to do it completely wrong. I have a lot more pictures that might help but it won't let me add more than one. Thank you
Thank you Todd so much!!!!!!!! I will pass this to my GC.
I inherited a 95 yr old house with an original metal tile roof (my grandparents built it in 1929). We found a leak once a few years ago and a roofer removed a tile and repaired the leak then put the old tile back. We have noticed now though a more rusty looking appearance to the tiles. No holes. As far as we know it has never been painted or treated in any way. What is recommended to care for it to extend its life?
