Standing Seam Panel End Lap

I had a new aluminum standing seam roof installed and on one section of a gable roof they end lapped a panel, even though they had full length panels available long enough to reach from ridge to eave. Are there any circumstances where this would normally be done or considered best practice (see attached photos)? Thanks
